Each year, Inc. publishes its list of 5,000 fastest growing private companies – and each year, MobiHealthNews combs through the collection to pull out as many health tech companies as we can find.
Although much of the draw of the Inc. 5,000 has been the chance to get an inside peek at the yearly revenue data of private companies, this year the publication has changed its format so that only three-year revenue growth by percentage is available publicly. (Inc. now limits the hard-revenue numbers to its proprietary database.) The self-reported data from these companies is based on the percentage of change in annual revenue over a three-year period, a method that allows smaller and lesser-known companies to claim a spot alongside larger operations.
But despite the new limitation, this year's list will be particularly noteworthy to the digital health industry for a different reason: the sheer number of health tech companies that have met the growth-oriented inclusion criteria compared to years past.
MobiHealthNews has pulled out 123 companies from the 2020 Inc. 5,000 that we judged to be in the digital health, health IT, medical device or consumer digital wellness space – a marked leap in representation when compared with the 61 companies we spotted last year.
Looking back on our Inc. 5,000 health tech roundups from 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, this jump represents the steepest incline since 17 private companies ballooned to 50 between 2016 to 2017. And if that steady year-to-year increase in featured companies hinted at an expanding landscape of healthcare technology, this year's massive jump of an additional 62 representatives should be a sign that the industry is continuing its growth with speed.
