There is no more exciting subject in healthcare than genomics and precision medicine. The way genomics has been accelerating is just astounding. The original human genome sequencing project took 13 years and $2.7 billion. We can now do a full genomic sequence in a few days and under $1000. However, what’s even more interesting is the discoveries that are being made when it comes to specific aspects of the genome and the ways your genome impacts your health.
We’ve also seen how impactful genomic sequencing has been amidst COVID-19 as genomics is being used to identify potential drug candidates and even help in finding a COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, in my recent interview with Joel Diamond, MD, FAAFP, Co-founder and CMO at 2bPrecise, he suggests that right now we’ve seen an explosion of genomics in regards to anything related to COVID-19 and a bit of a pause or at least a slow down on the rest of genomics.
If you want to learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on genomics and an update on where we are when it comes to precision medicine at the point of care and where it’s going, you’ll enjoy this interview with Diamond.
Here’s a look at the questions we discuss in the interview:
- Tell us a little about yourself and 2bPrecise
- How has the pandemic impacted healthcare’s interest in genetics and genomics?
- In what areas can genomics be particularly valuable during patient encounters in the current environment?
- Outside of COVID, why hasn’t precision medicine made it to the point of care more broadly? Where’s the value for a health system?
- What’s the role of EHR in bringing genomics to the clinical workflow?
- What are the most common misconceptions about genetic and genomic testing? (Clinicians and Patients)
- What do you anticipate happening in the next few years in regards to the growth of precision medicine?
