Moving Beyond Excel for Your Healthcare Analytics Needs

When I talk to healthcare analytics companies, we sometimes start talking about competitors in their space.  When doing so, I think the reply I get most often is that most healthcare organizations are currently using Excel.  This is surprising until you dig into it a little deeper.

Excel is a great competitor in the healthcare analytics space.  First, it’s more powerful than it probably gets credit for.  Second, it’s basically free to an organization since they’re going to spend money on Office regardless.  Third, everyone largely knows how to use it.  These are all really compelling reasons to use it.

That said, anyone who’s experienced Excel spreadsheet proliferation and it’s related disease Excel spreadsheet version inconsistency knows the downsides of Excel as well.  It’s made partially better with things like Sharepoint that allow people to easily share Excel files, manage versions, and be sure you have the latest data.  However, Excel very quickly becomes a challenge to manage at scale.

The good news is that there are some great analytics solutions out there that can solve this problem much better than Excel.  One example of that is the Oracle Analytics Cloud.  To learn more about what it’s like to shift your processes to a cloud analytics platform, I sat down with Elina Petrillo, Assistant Vice President, HR Technology, Northwell Health and Joey Fitts, VP, Product Strategy, Oracle Analytics to learn about Northwell Health’s recent efforts to move to Oracle Analytics along with the full Oracle Cloud HCM which includes payroll, core HR, benefits, recruitment, compensation, talent management, learning and helpdesk modules.

In this discussion, Petrillo shares what it’s like trying to do a project this big amidst the pandemic.  Plus, she highlights how the move to an analytics platform was extremely beneficial to their healthcare organization amidst the unique challenges the pandemic brought on them.  Check out the video interview below to learn more about their experience moving from a plethora of spreadsheets to a true analytics platform and the benefits that provided.
