I’m so psyched to be hosting HITsm again! As I was considering topics–will US healthcare’s hunger for ever-increasing profitability ever allow true value realization for individuals rather than corporations, will FHIR fizzle, will digital giants usurp data aggregators and gateways–I found out I’d been included on a new Top 50 list of Influential Voices in Healthcare. I wouldn’t have been on that list if it weren’t for this platform and this chat. So THAT’S what I want to talk about.
A decade ago, I’d built a name for myself as a healthcare data and technology consultant for local companies. I was working consistently and learning a ton. But I knew there was a whole universe of opportunity and information out there beyond my experience–so I joined Twitter to see what and who I could find. That first login led to life-changing connections and a winding ride of a career path I hadn’t imagined.
It’s fitting for me to use this week’s HITsm chat to reflect on the role social media plays in career development (and, in some cases, career destruction). John Lynn and the HITsm crew were catalysts for my personal brand development, which ultimately led me to so many firsts–my first visit to San Francisco where I met personal heroes, my first conference speaking engagement invitation, my first journal contributor invitation, and so many more. This community launched me through start-ups and large enterprise gigs alike, and supported me through successes and failures.
Thanks to you all, I’m right where I’m supposed to be. It turns out I was an analyst all along–just without the official designation! So I want to hear your stories–the good, the bad, and the ugly–and I want to know how this community can support each others’ growth and development.
