We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 1/22 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Janae Sharp (@CoherenceMed) from @SharpIndex on the topic “Social Media Data Privacy and Rights“.
Social Media algorithms control what we see and what we read. The age of digital media and algorithms means advertising companies and social media giants know what we want to purchase, and what our behavior online will be. In the case of election politics, they can be used to create division and unrest. Modern national security attacks can be as simple as an online ad strengthening our hyper-polarized bubbles. Algorithmic extremism makes us the fodder of extremists, with modern-day signal jamming packaged in shiny influencer sized Instagram stories.
If seeing is believing, controlling what we see will impact what is possible. Lack of regulation about how social media app companies like Facebook or Twitter address health concerns or ensure the security of health data means we do not know what they see, or how it could potentially impact our health. Social Media platforms like TikTok have data collection practices that are considered by some countries and individuals to be too invasive to be ethical. Join us in discussing social media data security considerations and implications for individuals and healthcare.
Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss the following topics.
