Wearables company Garmin expands to sleep health in collaboration with Sleeprate app

Consumer wearables company Garmin is expanding into sleep health in partnership with Israeli app developer Sleeprate.

The two companies developed a mobile self-help sleep assessment and improvement program that aims to help consumers sleep better, track their recovery and optimize workouts.

The sleep solutions market is attracting big players including retail and pharmacy giant Walgreens, which is collaborating with technology company Philips to offer sleep solutions and digital tools through its digital marketplace.

In 2018, Alphabet subsidiary Verily Life Sciences formed a joint venture with connected health company ResMed to focus on developing sleep apnea treatments and connected health products. Two years ago, Apple acquired Beddit, a sleep tracking hardware and software company, and it released a sleep tracker last year.

Sleep aids brought in close to $70 billion in revenue worldwide in 2017 and are on track to hit $102 billion by 2023, according to P&S Market Research.

In the collaboration with Garmin, Sleeprate will use the Garmin Health Companion SDK (software development kit) to access health and activity data from Garmin wearable devices. This will enable users of the Garmin wearables to gain a deeper and more accurate look at how physical performance and sleep are related, the companies said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 108 million people in the U.S. suffer from sleep deprivation, which is defined as less than the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep for adults.

Sleeprate's integration with Garmin will allow Sleeprate to create customized behavioral goals to improve sleep and e-coach to address poor sleep and exercise habits.

"One of the most important elements of overall health is sufficient and quality sleep," Dr. Anda Baharav, CEO and founder of Sleeprate, said in a statement. "People can exercise and eat healthy, but if they don't get enough quality sleep then they won't get the full benefits of the workout."

"This collaboration brings together industry-leading products and data and from both wellness and wearables leaders," said Sean McNamara, manager at Garmin Health. "The Companion SDK used by Sleeprate will allow consumers to get a deeper understanding of how exercise and sleep influence each other, providing an engaging solution that helps address sleep difficulties."
