This morning, Infermedica, a Wrocław, Poland-based artificial intelligence triage system, announced that it closed its Series A funding round with $10.25 million.

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Heal Capital led the round with participation from Karma Ventures, Inovo Venture Partners and Dreamit Ventures.

This comes roughly a year after Infermedica announced a $3.65 million funding round in June of 2019. The company said that as of today it has more than $15 million in venture dollars.

WHAT THEY DO

Infermedica, which is mainly B2B-focused, has a symptom checker, a call center triage feature and an API. The white label symptom checker uses AI to ask patients about their symptoms. The system then suggests what the most likely condition associated with those symptoms is. According to the startup, this symptom checker comes in the form of a chatbot or voice technology.

The company also provides a call center that uses telemedicine to help triage patients and direct them to the correct point of care.

Lastly, it has an API that can integrate with hospital and provider websites, apps and telemedicine systems.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the company created a tool specifically developed to detecting COVID-19 symptoms.

WHAT IT’S FOR

The Polish company plans to use this infusion of cash to support its R&D efforts and bolster its current features. It also plans to expand its footprint to Germany and the United States.

“We’re thrilled to welcome EBRD and Heal Capital as new investors on board of our venture. Our mission is to improve quality and access to primary care with the use of AI-powered, constantly improving technology,” Piotr Orzechowski, CEO at Infermedica, said in a statement. “As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed great pressure on health systems globally and it’s our obligation to help healthcare providers deliver safe and timely care. This additional funding will enable us to continue developing cutting-edge AI-triage technology and expand our commercial operations in the US and Germany.”

MARKET SNAPSHOT

There’s no shortage of triage and chatbot tools. One of the biggest names in the field is Babylon Health, a triage chatbot service that is also connected to a physician consultation service.

The company has previously launched Babylon at Hand, which is a partnership with the UK’s NHS and allows its users to book medical appointments, access a triage chatbot and consult with an NHS doctor through their smartphone. Most recently, Babylon announced that it is launching in the U.S

On the U.S. side of the pond, Buoy Health is growing in popularity as a symptom checking chatbot. In fact, the company was one of the first chatbots to roll out a COVID-19 checker back in February.
