Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry has undergone a digital transformation.

Now, as vaccines become more readily available, and as cases continue to fall, the question on many healthcare leaders’ minds is: How can that innovation continue in a post-pandemic world?

In a HIMSS21 Global Conference Digital Session set to air on Tuesday, August 10, Johnson & Johnson Executive Vice President and Enterprise Chief Information Officer Jim Swanson will speak with HIMSS Media Vice President of Content Strategy Stephen Wellman on just that.

The session will reminisce on the specific ways digital technology has touched healthcare during the pandemic – from the rise of telehealth to how it contributed to vaccine development – and the ways leaders can keep the momentum alive.

Another aspect of healthcare’s digital transformation touched on in the session will be its role in creating a more equitable system. Technology can be the bridge to serve the underserved, Swanson says, but organizations need to be responsible for the power that tech can create.

For example, patient information should be kept private and health data needs to be representative of the population it serves, according to Swanson.

In the session, Swanson will share how J&J leveraged partnerships with other organizations to bring emerging technologies to a wider audience – something he says was accelerated by the pandemic.

Rounding out their talk, Swanson and Wellman will discuss the big health tech trends of the present and predict what the next phase of innovation could look like.

Swanson’s discussion will be part of the HIMSS21 Digital session, “Pandemic Analysis & the Path Forward.” It's scheduled to air on Tuesday, August 10, from 9:23 to 9:43 a.m. PST. Read more about the HIMSS21 Digital program here.
