Let’s talk about the increasingly-used term “Digital Transformation.” The more I read and listen, the more I appreciate an understanding for what it is: “the use and adoption of new, fast, and frequently-changing digital technology to solve problems.” – source
Could the patient experience be improved with the adoption of new technology? I think the answer is a firm, yes!
Part of my learning about digital transformation has happened with my colleagues, with my new team at TiER1 Performance, and through experiencing a series of workshops designed to encourage people to think, ideate, and problem solve differently in this space.
What I have been most drawn to and encouraged by is the mindset that, while digital transformation certainly includes digital technology, it is not about the technology itself. The success of any digital transformation requires creating a mindset and culture of continuously applying digital solutions within an organization.
Since the healthcare industry was first pushed to implement electronic health records (EHR) in 2004, we now have a valuable trove of data points at our disposal. Those with the leadership mindset to improve the experience of care by making it safer and more effective for both its givers and recipients understand that EHR is an important springboard from which we can innovate.
The opportunity for healthcare leaders is that, to truly integrate digital solutions, they must make investments in leadership development, talent acquisition and retention, and digital culture in ways that change the long-standing beliefs and behaviors that drive how healthcare operates and measures success. It’s a continuous adoption of new mindsets and habits that allows healthcare organizations to transform the business model, change how they serve customers, and improve operational efficiencies.
